Hugo Chavez Highlights Importance of Latin American Unity
CUBA, June 25, 2010. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez highlighted on Friday the importance of Latin America’s unity during the Tenth Summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of the Americas (ALBA) that took place in the Ecuadorean city of Otavalo.
During his speech, prior to the signing of the final declaration of the event, Chavez said that it is necessary that the native peoples and Afro-descendants join the ongoing regional integrating efforts that are facing a counteroffensive by the international right wing.
“In the face of the threats by the US imperialism and the national bourgeois groups in our countries, we have to strengthen the unity of our peoples as the only way to continue our revolution,” he noted.
In reference to the chaotic situation that the world faces today, Chavez quoted the leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro who, in his reflections entitled ‘I Would So Much Like To Be Wrong’ published on Friday by Cuban media outlets, warns about an imminent war in the Middle East.
The member countries of ALBA are Bolivia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Cuba, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
