ALBA Embassies in Qatar Offer Press Conference on Gaza
QATAR, November 26, 2012.- In the morning of November 25, 2012, the Embassies of the countries of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of the Americas (ALBA) organized a press conference to release a Joint Statement condemning the new escalation of violence by the Israeli Armed Forces against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.
The press conference convened by the ALBA Missions to Qatar was covered by several reporters of the local media, including Qatar Tribune, Gulf Times, Al-Sharq and The Peninsula, as well as other foreign press agencies accredited in Qatar.
The Heads of Mission of the ALBA countries to the State of Qatar, namely: the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, the Republic of Cuba and the Republic of Ecuador, expressing the will of their peoples and governments, condemned the criminal acts by the Israeli army against the long-suffering Palestinian people in the besieged territory of Gaza.
The conference, held in the residence of the Cuban Ambassador, was also attended by H.E. Mr. Munir Abdullah Ghannam, Ambassador of Palestine to the State of Qatar. Ernesto D. Plasencia, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, read out the Joint Statement and reiterated the steadfast support of ALBA countries to the just cause of the Palestinian people and their inalienable right to an independent State with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Then, the Palestinian Ambassador thanked ALBA countries representatives for their initiative, clear proof of their unwavering support and solidarity. He pointed out that the truth was on their side for the “truly independent and free nations have always supported the just cause of the Palestinian people”.
The ALBA countries representatives gave the Palestinian Ambassador a dossier with copies in Arabic, English and Spanish of the Joint Statement of the Heads of Mission of ALBA countries to the State of Qatar and other documents like the Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba issued last November 16, as well as statements by President Hugo Chávez Frías from the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela condemning the new Israeli attack against Gaza and the letter he sent to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, endorsing the full recognition of Palestine as an independent State.
Finally, the floor was opened for questions and the reporters from Dar Al-Sharq and Associated Press asked the Heads of Mission whether this show of political support by ALBA countries was going to be accompanied by a material and/or economic aid.
Answering the questions, Ernesto D. Plasencia, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, highlighted the long-standing assistance the Caribbean nation has provided to the Palestinian people in several areas, especially in the training of human resources. Fernando Centeno, Chargé d’Affaires of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, reiterated the support of the Bolivarian nation and its top leader, Commander Chávez, to the Palestinian cause and Venezuela’s willingness to collaborate with the Palestinian people in every way possible.
